Brooklyn – McKell Park & Parsley Bay

Driving to the top of the mountain to McKell Park, a great little picnic area with views over the Hawkesbury River, Dangar Island and Parsley Bay, Brooklyn.

Well everyone, this is the last post for this website, it’s now full. Would like to thank all those who dropped by now and again, to have a look at our little travel blog, it really was just for us, our precious memories, but to see people from around the world have a look is amazing. Hope you found Australia appealing, we love it here. And thanks to WordPress too for their free websites.

Our next little escape is Forster on the northern coast of New South Wales. If you would like to have a look, please click on the following link – Jadah’s Travels No. 4

Brooklyn – Federation Foreshore Walk & The Anglers Rest Hotel

Off into Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River, a quick bite at The Anglers Rest Hotel (a very old pub, been here for ages). Down by the water, so of course, must have seafood, was very good. Now a walk along the Federation Foreshore Walk around Flat Rock Point and up to the Lookout.

Hawkesbury River – Kangaroo Point

A beautiful winter’s day, so south to the Hawkesbury River and Kangaroo Point and the Reserve, at Brooklyn. Walked along the foreshore around to the Old Hawkesbury River Road Bridge, to steps that lead up to the Bridge. Looks like maintenance work being done on the Bridge, certainly looks like it needs a paint job, looking pretty ratty. There’s a restaurant here too, Estuary, might check it out some time.

The Entrance North – The Sensory Garden

Have been out and about, dropped into The Sensory Garden and Pelicans Wharf (near the boat ramp), at The Entrance North – cloudy but the sun is shimmering beautifully on Tuggerah Lake. Some black swans decided to paddle by, all nicely in a row. There are viewing platforms along the shores of Tuggerah Lake, at the Garden, so you can sit and take in the view.

Somersby – Australian Reptile Park

The Australian Reptile Park, used to be located in the suburb of Wyoming, on the Central Coast, then in 1996 it relocated to Somersby. We have been meaning to go there for years, and have finally got there. Working our way through the reptile house, photos not too bad considering they are through glass (no flash of course), with only the lights and heating lamps as the light source.  Have to say the lizards, snakes, crocodiles kinda give me the heebie-jeebies (eeeek). The spider house interesting, you can watch them “milk” funnel-web spiders (one of our most poisonous spiders). Anything foreign to the spider makes it rear up, exposing it’s fangs. By using a device like a vaccum, they suck the poison off their fangs, which can be made into an anti-venom. Together with one of our other poisonous spiders, the Redback. Lots for the kids too – to the giant animated funnel-web spider, the interactive spider display (e.g. move the lever moves book on a shelf to display the spider hiding inside etc), to patting the kangaroos. It was a top day.

Swansea Heads – Reids Reserve

A perfect day, so heading north to Reids Reserve, at Swansea Heads. Walked around the headland, over the rock shelf, so many rock pools, and the water is so clear, just lovely.

Cheero Point on the Hawkesbury River

Continuing south along the Old Pacific Highway towards Brooklyn, turn north along the Hawkesbury River via Mooney Mooney to Cheero Point. Not a lot of streets here, so just going for a wander around the streets near the water.

Mooney Mooney Creek

It’s a beautiful day, so off for a little drive – following the Old Pacific Highway from Gosford, south to the old Mooney Mooney road bridge, then right onto Karool Road, Mooney Mooney. This gravel road is adjacent to the Mooney Mooney Creek and takes you down under the new Mooney Mooney Bridge, which is part of the M1 Motorway. The new Mooney Mooney Bridge is quite an impressive structure: is a twin cantilever bridge, and is the highest road bridge in Australia as measured from the road bed to the water 75m (246ft) below, with a span at the western end of the bridge being 135m (443ft) long, the main span is 220m (722ft) long and the eastern span is 131m (430ft) long (according to Wikipedia). We used to travel to work via the old Pacific Highway for many years, so we watched the bridge being built. When that section of the Motorway was opened in 1986, it certainly made travelling to work much easier. Hard to believe it was that long ago – it is now very overgrown under the bridge.

Berowra – Barnetts Reserve and Lookout

Last stop for the day, Barnetts Reserve and Lookout at Berowra, which looks down and over Berowra Valley National Park. Looks like bushfires have been through the Reserve quite some time ago, but bush regeneration going well. Many scarred trees from the fires, blackened trunks, even hollowed out, yet they are tenaciously holding there own, with good regrowth.

Berowra Waters

Our intention today was to visit Crosslands Reserve, Hornsby Heights, then head down through Galston Gorge, Dural, through Galston down to Berowra Waters, take the vehicle ferry across to Berowra, drop into Barnetts Lookout at Berowra, then up to the Freeway. When we arrived at the ferry, numerous cars were lined up, some started doing u-turns out of Berowra Waters, asked one of the drivers, what was going on – apparently the ferry was experiencing mechanical problems, so they were going out through The Gorge. Ah well, back the way we came in, so much for going on the ferry today, another day.
